5 Cyber Threats During The Covid-19 Pandemic.

What is happening in Indonesia is similar to what is happening globally as summarized in the Interpol Report released in April 2020 entitled “Global Landscape on Covid-19 Cyberthreat”. The report mentions 5 cyber threats that are currently occurred during the Covid pandemic, and those are:

a. Malicious domains; Until the end of March 2020 there has been an increase in new domains registered with the key words ‘COVID’ or ‘corona’, this takes advantage of the growing number of people seeking information about covid19. As many as 2,022 dangerous domains and 40,261 high risk domains, according to reports Palo Alto Networks.

b. Online scams and phishing; Cybercriminals create fake covid-related websites to entice victims to open malicious attachments or click phishing links. Trend micro reports that nearly one million percent of spam has been linked to covid since january 2020.

c. Data-harvesting malware; Data-gathering malware such as Remote Access Trojans, info stealers and spyware infiltrate electronic systems, using covid-related information as an enticement to enter networks, steal data, divert money, and build botnets.

d.Disruptive malware; Cybercriminals deploy disruptive malware such as ransomware against critical infrastructure and disaster response agencies such as hospitals and health centres, which are currently overwhelmed by the pandemic. ransomware or DDOS attacks like this aim to disrupt service systems and ask for a ransom in return.

e. Vulnerability of working from home; the electronic systems of normally closed organizations have to open up and provide pathways because everyone needs access to work from home. Criminals take advantage of this by trying to exploit existing vulnerabilities and weaknesses of users.
