The Law of Using Henna

Henna or Hena (حناء) is a dye commonly used to decorate a woman’s hands and feet, made from a plant material called “henna” (Lawsonia genus). In Indonesia, it is known as “pacar kuku”, so named according to its origin namely from a plant called “henna” (Lawsonia inermis).

The Law of Wearing Henna for Women.

Using a henna is a matter of muamalah that must be legal origin mubah (allowed). Although there are suggestions from the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam for women to use henna, so similar to men. From Aisyah radhiallahu’anha, he said:

أومأت امرأة من وراء ستر بيدها كتاب إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقبض رسول الله صلى الله عليهور رم لله له عليهه قالت: بل امرأة. قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: لو كنت امرأة لغيرت أظفارك يعني بالحناء

“A woman sticks out an opponent from behind a curtain. Write for the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Then it turns out that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam held his hand and said,” I do not know, is this a man’s hand or a woman’s hand? “. The woman answered, “This is a woman’s hand”. So the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: “If you are a woman, you should paint your fingers with a henna” (Narrated by Abu Daud 4166, Al Albani in Sahih Abi Daud).

Because most scholars even say that using henna is legal mustahab (sunnah). Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz said: “There is no doubt that describing the hand of a woman with a henna is the law mustahab (sunnah). There are suggestions in some of the hadith that are not free from weakness. But the main case for women to be written with a henna. or forbid it then I don’t know what is the basis, but the main thing is drawing a woman’s hand with a henna so they are not seen with a man. women, and it was common knowledge in the time of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam, and the time after that, so using henna for that woman is better and more important “(Fatawa Nurun’ ala Darbi, https://www.binbaz.org.sa/ noor / 7).

Wearing a henna is also possible in the Shari’a because it includes decorating for the husband, who is demanded in the Shari’a, so that it can perpetuate the household, channel lust to the halal road and switch from channeling lust for the unlawful.

Sheikh Shalih bin Fauzan Al Fauzan said: “There is no need to use women for their feet and their hands in any shape and style. Because women are required to decorate in front of their husbands” (Source: http: //ar.islamway. net / fatwa / 9981).

Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al Utsaimin said: “Coloring hands with a henna is a case that is already familiar among women. This is their habit of decorating. As long as this can beautify women, this is a case required in the Shari’a to decorate themselves in front of their husbands, whether they describe all their fingers or not all of them. Some use manaakir (nail polish) is haraam for women who are not platform, so use ablution water to the skin.

Releasing is first removed before ablution “(Source: http://ar.islamway.net/fatwa/3838).

Should not be shown to men who are not mahram

In general, this jewelry includes women’s jewelry. Therefore it should not be shown to men who are not mahram, according to the word of Allah Ta’ala:

وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ ِ َّ َ ُ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ َ

“And say to the women of the believers: take it they bow their view and ask for their debate, and ask them not to show their usual jewelry” (QS. An Nur: 31.)

Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Baz said: “If a woman is taking or taking with a henna, ask her to close it from people.” It can be covered with cloth or clothes, because it causes slander ”(Fatawa Nurun‘ alad Darbi, 17/272, quoted from https://islamqa.info/ar/223251).

Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al Utsaimin said: “It is imperative to know that henna is a piece of jewelry that a woman should not be exposed to except for those permitted by Allah to show her jewelry. That is, it should not be shown to the ajnabi men (who are not mahram). So if he wants to go to the market for a need, for example, he must wear socks if he wears henna on his feet at that time. Likewise henna on the palm (and back) of the hands, must be closed from people. And indeed covering the palm (and back) of the hand is prescribed, if around it there are ajnabi men. Either he uses henna or not ”(Fatawa Nurun‘ alad Darbi, 2/7, quoted from https://islamqa.info/ar/223251).

Thus, hopefully useful. Wabillahi at taufiq was sadaad.
